Rutherford B. Hayes, then 30, married 21-year-old Lucy Webb on December 30, 1852. While serving as first lady from 1877 to 1881, Lucy spearheaded a project to commission several portraits of presidents and first ladies for the White House and encouraged her servants to pursue their educational goals.
