My initial goal in becoming a musician was to NOT be a slave to the dreaded “day job” (sometimes called “straight job”). This is a subtle but insidious idea, that somehow working at a job outside music is uncool. Over time, I met many great musicians who had the coolest day jobs. They were working in technology, medicine, business, teaching, administration, psychology, travel, broadcasting, science, or just about any imaginable industry or endeavor. Their work outside music dovetailed with their music career in fascinating ways.
